COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. –
Dani Fonseca hit the walk-off home run in what could be her final home plate appearance while freshman
Haley Smith pitched back-to-back complete game victories as the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (19-19, 16-17 RMAC) swept MSU Denver (26-16, 21-9 RMAC) with 3-1 and 1-0 wins. The Mountain Lions and Roadrunners are scheduled to play another doubleheader on Saturday, pending the incoming storm system.
Fonseca improved her career home run total 36 with her third hit of the day. She moved into a tie for No. 10 in UCCS single-season records with her 12th home run of the season. Fonseca is three home runs away from a tie for fourth in UCCS career charts.
Smith threw 171 pitches in the two complete games and improved to 10-7 this season. She gave up only two hits in the first game and six in the second game, and combined for four strikeouts today. Smith earned her second shutout of the season and lowered her earned run average to 3.16.
Nikki Hoffman led off the first game with a single to right field, but a fielder's choice and a strikeout only left one runner on base with two outs.
Makenna Smith singled down the right field line and moved
Melissa Martinek to second base, and Fonseca used a well-placed double to right-center field to score both
Makenna Smith and Martinek for an early 2-0 lead.
The Roadrunners answered with a solo home run in the top of the second that went over the wall a few feet away from the left field foul post. Fonseca drove in the third run of the day for the Mountain Lions in the third inning with a single to right-center field to rebuild the two-run advantage at 3-1.
Haley Smith retired 14 consecutive batters from the end of the second through the start of the seventh before the Roadrunners put a runner on first with a throwing error in the seventh. MSU Denver used a sacrifice bunt to move the runner into scoring position for the second out of the inning. The next batter put a single into center field, and the lead runner went around third and was thrown out at the plate on the tag for the final out of the game.
MSU Denver had another runner thrown out at the plate after rounding third in the first inning of the second game and UCCS went down in order in the first two innings as the teams were tied 0-0.
Amanda Nobles reached scoring position in the third inning and Hoffman reached base with a single to left field, but both Mountain Lions were stranded by the end of the inning.
The Roadrunners advanced a runner to third in the fourth before a ground out to Hoffman and
Haley Smith reached second after a sacrifice bunt, but both teams remained tied at 0-0. Both teams matched each other with a hit each in the fifth and retired the other in order in the sixth to keep the score at 0-0 going to the seventh. MSU Denver went down in order again in the top of the seventh, which brought up Fonseca as the leadoff batter in the bottom of the seventh. She took the first pitch she saw and hit it over the left field fence for the walk-off home run in the 1-0 win.
The Mountain Lions surpassed last year's win total with today's wins and have six regular season games left. The victories were the first against MSU Denver since April 5, 2014. UCCS remained in seventh in the conference standings with today's victories.
UCCS and MSU Denver are scheduled to complete the series with a doubleheader on Saturday at noon. Any changes due to weather conditions will be made at GoMountainLions.com, and through the main athletics twitter account, @GoMountainLions.
