PUEBLO, Colo. – RMAC Player of the Week
Melissa Martinek had two doubles and
Dani Fonseca struck out ___ batters in the second game as the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (10-5, 7-3 RMAC) split today's action against Colorado State-Pueblo (4-17, 3-7 RMAC) today at the Rawlings Softball Complex. The ThunderWolves won the first game 2-0 before the Mountain Lions claimed the second game 4-3.
Makenna Smith and
Haley Smith opened the second inning of the second game with back-to-back singles and
Makenna Smith scored on a single to right field by
Kylie Barnard.
Haley Smith made it a 2-0 Mountain Lion in the fourth inning, and
Melissa Martinek scored on a single by
Makenna Smith in the fifth inning to push the UCCS lead to 3-0.
Dani Fonseca and the Mountain Lion defense held the ThunderWolves to a single base runner in the first four innings and held CSU-Pueblo with no hits until the bottom of the fifth inning.
Paige Duncan scored on a sacrifice fly by
Nikki Hoffman to make it a 4-0 lead in the sixth inning. The ThunderWolves scored its first run of the game in the bottom half of the inning before Fonseca used her second strikeout of the inning to take the Mountain Lions to the seventh. She earned another strikeout to open the bottom of the seventh before CSU-Pueblo closed the UCCS lead down to a run at 4-3 with three hits. A fly out to
Jordyn Cusimano in left field secured the win for the Mountain Lions to finish the day.
Fonseca improved to 5-1 on the season in her third complete game of the season with seven strikeouts.
Makenna Smith went three-of-four to lead the offense while
Haley Smith and Barnard both went two-of-three.
Haley Smith's home run was her third of the season and the Mountain Lions recorded three doubles from Martinek, Barnard and Duncan. UCCS recorded 10 hits for the eighth game with double-digit hits.
UCCS struggled against the CSU-Pueblo pitching in the first game as the ThunderWolves allowed no hits and only three walks. An error in the outfield put
Haley Smith onto second base in the top of the fifth inning with one out but she wasn't able to reach home after a ground out and a strikeout.
Haley Smith took her first loss of the season and moved to 4-1 in her fourth complete game of the season. She struck out four batters and gave up only one earned run to lower her earned run average to 1.93 this season.
The Mountain Lions and ThunderWolves will finish the series with a doubleheader on Sunday at 11 a.m.
