Welsh Scores 30 Points as UCCS Wins at Regis

DENVER – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs used an early 14-2 run to take lead against Regis and shot 67 percent from the field in a 104-94 victory at the Regis Fieldhouse tonight. It was the seventh win in the last eight games for the Mountain Lions.

Alex Welsh led both teams with 30 points and only missed two shots from the field in a 12-of-14 performance and a perfect four-of-four at the free throw line. It was his third 30-point game in the last five contests and he moved to within 100 points of the UCCS career scoring record with 1,835 points.

Regis stayed within 15 points of the Mountain Lions for the entire first half before UCCS started to expand the lead in the second half. The Mountain Lions built a 21-point lead at 82-61 with 9:16 to play after a three-pointer from Kendall Godley. The Rangers used a late 15-4 run to pull within seven points at 97-90 with 1:43 to play, but wouldn't be able to pull closer as the Mountain Lions reached the century mark for the second straight game in the 104-94 victory.

Godley finished with 18 points and led both teams with seven assists. Tim Haas led the bench with 14 points, all in the first half with four-of-eight shooting at the three-point line. Dalton Patten scored 12 points with five rebounds and improved his career scoring total to 983 points. Brandon Malone added 11 points and Elijah Ross scored 10 points with a team-high and season-high eight rebounds.

The Mountain Lions shot 60 percent or better from the field for the second time this season, and the 66.7 percent was the best single-game team performance in the RMAC this year. The Mountain Lions made 16 of 28 three-point shots for the third performance this year of 50 percent or better from long range.

UCCS will finish the regular season at home with three games in the next two weeks. The home stretch begins on Friday, Feb. 19, in a 7:30 p.m., game against Black Hills State. The Mountain Lions won the first meeting against the Yellow Jackets 93-66 on Jan. 23.
