GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's soccer team saw their season come to an end as they fell, 2-1, to No. 23 Regis in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference semifinals Friday night.
The No. 3-seeded Mountain Lions got on the board first when freshman
Jake Demerath found the back of the net off a shot from nearly 18 yards out in the 22
nd minute. The goal was the fourth of the season for the newcomer.
However, the lead stood for less than 30 seconds as the Rangers' Tom Grimley scored the equalizer off a rebound in the area.
The 1-1 score line lasted deep into the second half until No. 2-seeded Regis received the game-winner from Brian Strasbaugh in the 75
th minute, the junior's first goal of the season.
UCCS put up three more shots in the final minutes, but were unable to break through to force extra time.
For the Mountain Lions,
Austin Seifert paced the team with four shots (two on goal) as fellow senior
Cort Searls placed both of his shots on frame.
David Meyer took the loss after making three stops in goal for UCCS, who end the season with a record of 12-7-1.
With the win, Regis advances to the RMAC Championship game where they will face top-seeded Colorado Mesa on Sunday at 1 p.m.
NOTES:
- In all three meetings between the two teams this season, all have been decided by one goal. The Rangers edged the Mountain Lions in two out of the three games.
- UCCS finished the season having faced seven opponents that were nationally-ranked.
