Jen Vigil led the Mountain Lions with 21 points and sophomore
Kelly O'Flannigan added a career-high 10 points as UCCS (3-3) finished the non-conference season on the short end of a 66-65 game to Morningside (6-1).
The Mountain Lions used a seven-point run to turn an 8-4 deficit into an 11-8 advantage just past the five-minute mark of the first quarter and held a 17-14 lead after the opening period. The Mustangs tied the game at 27-27 with 1:54 left in the second quarter, but UCCS didn't let Morningside retake the lead and went into the locker room with a 30-29 advantage.
Vigil made a pair of three-pointers in the final 18 seconds of the third quarter to break a 45-45 tie and take the Mountain Lions into the fourth quarter with a 51-45 lead. The Mustangs started the final quarter with 11 straight points before Vigil broke the scoring drought on a three-pointer with 6:19 to play to make it a 56-54 lead. Her younger sister,
Kristen Vigil, blocked a three-pointer on the next Mustang possession and scored in transition to tie the game 17 seconds later at 56-56. Morningside scored the next eight points and UCCS pulled back within one point with a deep three-pointer from
Kristen Vigil with 19.4 seconds to play.
The Mustangs turned the ball over in front of the UCCS bench on the inbound play to set the Mountain Lions up with possession with 15.6 seconds to play, but UCCS turned it over with six seconds to play. The Mountain Lions only had two team fouls in the fourth quarter and couldn't put Morningside at the free throw line to earn possession in the final seconds in the one-point loss.
The Mountain Lions recorded their best ball control of the year with a season-low 14 turnovers. UCCS made 12 steals on the defensive side, one off of yesterday's season-high as four Mountain Lions finished with multiple steals today.
Kristen Vigil made a season-high six assists and scored nine points. O'Flannigan recorded her first double-digit scoring performance of her career and made five rebounds to share the team lead with
Tori Fisher.
UCCS will open the home season and the RMAC season on Friday, Dec. 2, in a 5:30 p.m., game with Black Hills State. The Yellow Jackets went 0-4 in their non-conference schedule.?
