COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's basketball team will finish a four-game road schedule with a regional contest on Wednesday afternoon against former RMAC foe Nebraska-Kearney. The Mountain Lions (0-3) and Lopers (2-2) will tip-off a 3 p.m., MST, from the Health and Sports Center in Kearney, Neb.
Wednesday's meeting will be the first between the teams since Nebraska-Kearney left the RMAC for the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association after the 2011-12 season. It's the first time the Mountain Lions have played an MIAA opponent since the start of the 2003-04 season. Although the teams are not within the South Central Region, the game will be considered a regional contest in the postseason criteria because the teams are from neighboring states.
UCCS will be looking for its first win of the season after an 83-61 loss to Colorado State-Pueblo last Saturday in a nonconference game.
Blend Avdili is leading the team with 12 points per game off the bench in each game, and is one of three Mountain Lions averaging five rebounds per game or more.
Justin Smith leads the trio with 5.3 per game while
Brandon Malone and Avdili both have five per game.
The Lopers were picked sixth in the MIAA Preseason Coaches' Poll. Nebraska-Kearney is coming off a 73-69 loss to Colorado Mines on Sunday after holding a 69-66 lead with two minutes to play. Yashua Trent is averaging 21 points per game while Trey Lansmen has 17.8 per game and a team-leading seven rebounds per game. The Lopers reached the second round of the NCAA Division II Tournament last season and lost to eventual national champion Augustana.
The game will be carried live on the UCCS Athletic Network with Charlie Botnick handling play-by-play duties. Live video and stats will be available for free with links on GoMountainLions.com, and live updates will be posted on the men's basketball twitter account, @UCCSMBB.
