Cassidy Bush led the UCCS offense with 13 kills while
Natasha Habert and
Morgan Evans moved up the Mountain Lion record books as the University of Colorado Colorado Springs finished the regular season with a 3-2 victory tonight against South Dakota Mines. The Mountain Lions (17-9, 12-6 RMAC) won in 25-17, 22-25, 25-17, 24-26 and 15-7 set scores against the Hardrockers (1-28, 0-18 RMAC).
The win secured the No. 3 seed for UCCS in the 2016 RMAC Tournament and a home playoff game on Tuesday at 7 p.m., at the Gallogly Events Center. The third-place finish ties the highest finish in program history for the Mountain Lions.
The Mountain Lions broke a 9-9 tie in the first set and scored nine straight points to take an 18-9 lead against the Hardrockers early in the match. UCCS reached set point at 24-15 with a kill from
Lauren Brown, and South Dakota Mines held off set point three times before Bush secured the win with a kill for the 25-17 Mountain Lion win.
The Hardrockers used a pair of 5-1 runs in the second to build a 17-13 lead against the Mountain Lions. UCCS closed the gap down to one point at 20-19 and stayed within a point at 21-20, but South Dakota Mines kept the lead and evened the match with a 25-22 decision in the set.
UCCS didn't let South Dakota Mines put together more than back-to-back points in the third set to take the third set 25-17 and regain a set advantage in the match score. The Mountain Lions reached match point at 24-19 in the fourth set before the Hardrockers scored seven straight points to take the set 26-24 and force a deciding fifth set.
The rally continued into the fifth set where South Dakota Mines scored the first two points. UCCS scored six of the next eight points to take a 6-4 lead and would dominate the rest of the set to win the night on a 15-7 victory in the fifth set.
Bush hit .407 with her 13 kills in her third match with double-digit kills in the last four matches. She recorded one block tonight and needs three more to become the seventh Mountain Lion in program history with 300 career blocks.
Habert became the third student-athlete in program history with 500 digs in a season and her 19 digs tonight moved her within one dig of a tie for second in program records. She has 516 digs this season, one short of Laura Meeter's mark set in 2006 and 10 off of the record set by Andrea Weedman in 2005.
Evans moved into third in career assists with 44 tonight and has 2,804 in her career. She moved past Jessica Stewart today and needs 294 to tie Stephanie Shalosky for second in the records. Evans moved into fifth in season assists and has 1,138 this year, in the best season performance since 2004. She needs 77 more to tie Lindsey Hillegass for fourth.
UCCS will host No. 6 seed Colorado Christian on Tuesday at 7 p.m., in the first home playoff match in program history. The Mountain Lions won 3-1 when the two teams met in the regular season on Oct. 21, in the Gallogly Events Center.
