UCCS Wins Third Straight with Vigil's 28 Points

SPEARFISH, S.D. – Jen Vigil scored a career-high 28 points with seven 3-pointers to lead the University of Colorado Colorado Springs to a 70-60 victory against Black Hill State tonight at the Donald E. Young Center. Brittany Hernandez added 19 points for the Mountain Lions (13-6, 9-4 RMAC) and Shannon Kelly led both teams with 10 rebounds.

Vigil scored the first seven points for the Mountain Lions with back-to-back three-pointers to provide a 7-6 lead for UCCS. Black Hills State retook the lead at 9-7 before the Mountain Lions mounted a nine-point rally for a 16-9 advantage with 2:32 left in the first quarter. Vigil finished with four 3-pointers in the first period as UCCS led the Yellow Jackets 23-16.

The Mountain Lions scored the first five points of the second quarter and kept Black Hills State off the scoreboard for nearly the first four minutes of the period for a 28-16 lead before the first Yellow Jacket points. Black Hills State closed the gap by half by the intermission break as the Mountain Lions led 37-31.

UCCS opened the second half on a 13-2, with the final nine points coming off of three straight possessions with three-point field goals. The Mountain Lions kept a double-digit lead until midway through the fourth quarter but didn't let Black Hills get closer than seven points to secure the 70-60 win tonight. It was the second home loss for the Yellow Jackets and the first against a conference opponent this season.

Vigil went seven-of-nine at the three-point line and tied for second in UCCS single-game records for made three-pointers. She added one more two-point field goal and five points off of six free throw attempts to surpass her previous single-game best by seven points. Vigil also made five steals on defense.

Hernandez made half of her 10 field goals and was a perfect eight-of-eight at the free throw line. She made three blocked shots and seven rebounds. Kelly recorded seven of her 10 rebounds on the defensive side and led 41-35 rebounding advantage for the Mountain Lions.

UCCS will return to the Gallogly Events Center next weekend on Jan. 29-30. The Mountain Lions will host Western New Mexico (7-11, 5-8 RMAC) on Friday and New Mexico Highlands (3-15, 1-12 RMAC) on Saturday in 5:30 p.m., games both nights.
