ALAMOSA, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs won its third straight match the fifth match in the last six in a three-set sweet of Adams State today at Plachy Hall. The Mountain Lions (9-5, 4-1 RMAC) won in 25-21, 25-21, 25-16 sets against the Grizzlies (2-10, 1-3 RMAC).
UCCS and Adams State tied 13 times through 15-15 in the first set before a kill from
Kim Catlett started the final push for the Mountain Lions in the set. UCCS outscored the Grizzlies 10-6 to close out the period with two kills each from Catlett and Bush to take the 1-0 match lead on a 25-21 victory. The Mountain Lions hit .306 in the first set with a match-high 15 kills.
UCCS put together a five-point run in the second set for a 13-8 advantage, and built it to a 20-13 lead after a block from Catlett and
Taylor Hamilton. Adams State scored the next six points to cut the Mountain Lion lead to 20-19, and UCCS responded with the next four points for a 24-19 advantage. The Grizzlies held off set point twice before Hamilton ended the set with a kill for a 25-21 victory.
Adams State's 7-1 run in the beginning of the third set provided the Grizzlies their largest lead of the afternoon at 10-6. After a UCCS timeout, the teams exchanged points before the Mountain Lions put together a 19-6 run, including six straight points early in the run, to win the set 25-16 and win the fourth 3-0 match of the season.
Catlett finished the afternoon with team-highs with 13 kills, nine digs and five blocks. She made four solo blocks to tie the second-best performance in program history for a three-set match. Hamilton added 10 kills and hit .350 in her third straight match with a hitting percentage greater than .300.
Morgan Evans accounted for 32 of the Mountain Lions' 37 assists.
UCCS will return home next weekend for a Friday match with Black Hills State and a Saturday contest against South Dakota Mines.
