COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. –
Taylor Braden scored her third goal of the season in the 72nd minute and it would be her second game-winning goal as No. 13 University of Colorado Colorado Springs defeated Colorado Christian 1-0 in a non-conference game at Mountain Lion Stadium. UCCS (3-1) finished with 13 shots on goal against the Cougars (0-3-1).
UCCS put seven shots on goal in the first half, including three in a two-minute span midway through the half. The Mountain Lion defense allowed only one shot on goal and three total in the opening half, but the teams were both scoreless at halftime.
The Mountain Lions continued to control the pace in the second half with a 5-1 shot advantage through the first 25 minutes. A foul against Colorado Christian set up a free kick for Braden from 45 yards away from the net, and her kick beat the keeper in the top left corner to break the tie. UCCS held a 5-0 shot advantage for the rest of the game, with two on goal and another that hit the post, and the goal held as the game-winner for the Mountain Lions.
Braden is tied for the RMAC lead with two game-winning goals and tied for second with three total goals. She is tied for fifth in program records for season game-winning goals and is one goal away from a top-10 ranking in all goals.
The UCCS defense held the Cougars to only one shot on goal and
Brandi Arsenault earned her second shutout of the season. She is tied for the conference lead in shutouts and is third in the league with a 0.485 goals-against average.
The Mountain Lions will continue their seven-game home stand on Friday, Sep. 18, with the start of the RMAC season against Regis. The Rangers lost for the first time this season today in a 2-1 decision to Cal Poly Pomona.
