UCCS Wins First Game Against Mines, Fort Lewis Game Suspended to Sunday

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs opened the weekend with a 4-2 victory against Colorado School of Mines and will continue its game with Fort Lewis College on Sunday after the game was suspended with the Skyhawks leading 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning. The game will continue at the point it was suspended at noon Sunday.

Korey Kulpins allowed only three hits through the first five innings and UCCS took the lead with a RBI single from Makenna Smith in the bottom of the fourth inning to score Jordyn Cusimano. Whitney Weber was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Kylie Barnard scored to make it a 2-0 lead for the Mountain Lions after the fourth.

The Orediggers tied the game with a two-run home run to left center field in the sixth inning. The Mountain Lions loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning for Emily Jennings, who used a single up the middle to score Weber and Lexi Belligan and put UCCS back ahead by two runs at 4-2.

Hayley Miller came in for Kulpins in the seventh inning with a save opportunity. She went down in the count 2-0 after the first two pitches, but threw nine strikes in her next 12 pitches to strike out the side and secure her first save in a 4-2 victory for the Mountain Lions.

Jennings went two-of-four in the game and moved into ninth in UCCS career records with 182 hits. Kulpins earned her sixth win of the season.

The UCCS defense held the Skyhawks to a single baserunner in the first three innings of the second game and the Mountain Lion offense took the lead with a two-run home run from Jennings in the bottom of the third. Fort Lewis responded with solo home runs in the fourth and fifth innings to tie the game at 2-2.

The Skyhawks took the lead with a two-run home run in the sixth inning. Rayle Glover scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning to make it a one-run game at 4-3, and the Mountain Lions put runners on second and third with two outs before the game was suspended due to heavy precipitation and deteriorating field conditions.

The game will be restarted at noon on Sunday, with the rest of the scheduled games to follow after the conclusion of tonight's suspended game.
