White Scores 50 as UCCS Wins First NCAA Tourney Game

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – University of Colorado Colorado Springs junior guard Derrick White broke the UCCS single-game scoring record with 50 points as the Mountain Lions (27-5) won 90-87 against Colorado School of Mines (23-5) at Wisdom Gymnasium. It's the first win in the NCAA Tournament for UCCS in men's program history.

The Mountain Lions put together a 12-2 run near the end of the first half to break a 31-31 tie and take a 43-33 lead with 1:15 to play. UCCS held a 43-36 halftime lead and White finished one rebound shy of a double-double at the intermission.

Colorado Mines took its first lead of the game with a 14-6 run to start the second half. Each team remained within a possession of each other until Mines took a 66-62 lead with 11 minutes to play. White tied the game with a three-pointer at 70-70 with 9:20 to play, but the Orediggers retook a seven-point advantage at 85-78 with just under four minutes to play.

The Orediggers held the six-point advantage after a pair of free throws with 2:50 to play before a dunk by Dalton Patten sparked the 9-0 game-winning run. Patten's dunk brought the game to 87-83 five seconds later, and White cut the game down to a point with a defensive rebound and three-point shot with 1:59 to play. The Mountain Lions forced the turnover but couldn't score on its next possession. Colorado Mines missed the layup on the other end and Alex Welsh grabbed the defensive rebound with 1:16 remaining.

Tim Billingsley hit a three-point shot in the left corner with 1:11 to play to put UCCS back ahead at 89-87. Colorado Mines missed the three-point shot, and the Mountain Lions grabbed the defensive rebound with 46 seconds to play. Darius Pardner was fouled with 17 seconds left, made the first of the one-and-one to make it a three-point lead at 90-87, and the Orediggers missed the three-point shot as time expired.

White broke Jack Bain's UCCS record of 46 points set on Feb. 17, 2004, and tied Colorado Mesa's Jon Baskin with 832 points for the RMAC season record. White added 14 rebounds and made eight assists, including the pass to Billingsley to put the Mountain Lions ahead. He also added three blocked shots and three steals.

Darius Pardner scored nine points, and Welsh and Patten scored eight points each. The Mountain Lions shot 50 percent from the field and 42 percent from the three-point line.

UCCS will play top seed Tarleton State on Sunday at 6:30 p.m., MDT, at Wisdom Gymnasium. The Texans defeated St. Mary's 71-52 in the first game of the evening session. The Mountain Lions are the final remaining team from the RMAC after MSU Denver lost its game to Midwestern State 58-56.
