CANYON, Texas – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's basketball team put together a 14-2 run in the second half run and won its first NCAA tournament game in program history with a 73-63 victory against Colorado State-Pueblo at the First United Bank Center. The Mountain Lions (25-6) will face Colorado Christian (19-13) in the 2015 NCAA Division II Tournament Second Round on Saturday at 4 p.m., MDT.
UCCS scored the first five points of the game and held the ThunderWolves to no points for nearly the first three minutes. CSU-Pueblo responded with a 9-3 run to take the 9-8 advantage with 13:12 to play in the period, and held onto the lead until late in the half.
Tori Fisher missed the second of her two free throws with 1:45 to play, the Mountain Lions collected the offensive rebound, and
Brittany Hernandez made the three-pointer for a 37-36 lead with 1:39 left. Â The ThunderWolves made one of their two free throws to tie the game at 37-37 with 24 seconds to play and UCCS missed on two chances to take the halftime lead as time expired.
Fisher went four-of-six from the field in the first half and led the Mountain Lions at the break with 12 points. Hernandez added nine points and
Abby Kirchoff scored eight in the first period.
CSU-Pueblo scored eight straight points early in the second half to put UCCS down 45-39 in the first three minutes of the half. The Mountain Lion defense held the ThunderWolves without a field goal for the next three minutes and made a pair of three-pointers and Jessika Kiemitz made three free throws to take a 48-47 lead. Katie Nehf, the RMAC Defensive Player of the Year, made the layup and drew a foul to put CSU-Pueblo back ahead at 50-48 before the Mountain Lions assembled its game-winning run.
UCCS shot 56 percent from the three-point line in the second half, and
Jen Vigil went three-of-four from the three-point line in the period. The Mountain Lions led by at least 10 points for the final 3:54 of the game to claim the first NCAA postseason win in history.
Hernandez led UCCS with 15 points and broke the program season rebounding record with seven boards today. She has 264 this season to break Tara Newton's record of 263 from the 1992-93 season. Fisher finished with 14 points and Kirchoff scored 13 as both student-athletes grabbed seven rebounds.
Shannon Kelly led the Mountain Lions with five assists and added 10 points.
Colorado Christian defeated Midwestern State 67-57 in its first round game earlier in the day. The Cougars won the last meeting against UCCS 66-51 in the RMAC Tournament Semifinal game last Friday..
