Weber Scores Three Runs as UCCS Drops Series Finale

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – University of Colorado Colorado Springs freshman Whitney Weber scored three of the five Mountain Lion runs, but Colorado Mesa used a pair of four-run innings to claim a 13-5 decision in six innings to close out the series.

UCCS took advantage of an error in the first inning to score Weber, who had advanced to third three batters earlier. Colorado Mesa scored three in the bottom half of the inning, and Nikki Hoffman tied it up in the top half of the second with a two-RBI double down the right field line. Kylie Barnard used a sacrifice fly to score Hoffman to put the Mountain Lions up 4-3.

The Mountain Lions kept the one-run lead after the top of the third inning, but the Mavericks hit a grand slam in the bottom of the third to take the 7-4 lead. Colorado Mesa scored another four runs with two outs for the 11-4 advantage after four innings.

Both teams put runners in scoring position in the fifth inning but were scoreless in the inning. UCCS took advantage of another Maverick error in the sixth inning to score Weber and cut the Colorado Mesa down to 11-5. The Mountain Lion defense recorded two outs against the Mavericks in the first three batters, but a single and a walk setup a two-RBI double to left center field for Colorado Mesa to earn the run-rule decision in a 13-5 score.

Weber went two-of-four at the plate and Hoffman earned her sixth double of the series today.

UCCS will return home for a four-game series against New Mexico Highlands March 7-8. The Cowgirls (1-9 / 0-3 RMAC) had its games against Fort Lewis and Colorado Christian cancelled this weekend.
