COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs hit three home runs in the second game, including a grand slam from
Tressa Radach and the walk-off three-run hit from
Kylie Barnard as the Mountain Lions (3-4 / 1-1 RMAC) claimed a 13-10 win against Adams State (3-5 / 1-1 RMAC) in the second game of a doubleheader at Mountain Lion Field. The Grizzlies won the conference-opener for both teams 7-1 earlier in the day.
The final two games of the series were cancelled due to current weather conditions today and the predicted weather conditions for Saturday. RMAC rules mandate that a series must be completed within a 48-hour span, and games not played will not be rescheduled.
Makenna Smith put the Mountain Lions on the board first with a two-out home run in the first inning. It was her first of the season, and came after she entered the game for
Emily Jennings, who went down with an injury on a stolen base in the top half of the inning. Adams State tied it in the top of the third off a fielder's choice, and then took the 3-1 lead in the fourth inning with the help of back-to-back extra-base hits. The Grizzlies added another pair of runs in both the sixth and seventh innings en route to the 7-1 decision to open the day.
UCCS capitalized on two wild pitches and a fielding error to a 2-1 lead after the first inning of game two. Both teams were scoreless in the second inning.
Nikki Hoffman drew a lead-off walk in the third inning and then
Dani Fonseca put the Mountain Lions ahead 4-1 with a home run into a strong north wind over the center field fence. The Grizzlies used their own home run in the top of the fourth to make it a two-run game at 4-2.
Adams State's first two batters of the fifth inning were retired in a pair of groundouts, but a pair of home runs resulted in seven runs and an 11-4 lead for the Grizzlies. The Mountain Lions responded with five runs in the bottom of the fifth, helped by Radach's grand slam to the game at 11-11. The game went to extra innings tied at 11-11 as the teams combined for three hits in the sixth and seventh innings.
The Grizzlies took advantage of an error and wild pitch to take a 12-11 lead in the top of the eighth inning before
Whitney Weber drew the leadoff walk in the bottom of the eighth. Weber stole second to move into a scoring position, and tied the game on a double from Hoffman. Fonseca earned a four-pitch walk to setup Radach's home run to center field on a 2-1 count.
Lexi Belligan went three-of-six at the plate to lead the Mountain Lion offense today.
Stephanie Chitkowski earned her first victory of the season in the second game in her second relief appearance of the day.
UCCS will travel to Colorado Mesa next weekend for a four-game series in Grand Junction, Colo. The Mavericks (7-8 / 3-0 RMAC) won three games against Colorado Mines in Pueblo, Colo., today.
