UCCS Secures RMAC Tournament Bid

GUNNISON, Colo. – Kim Catlett led the University of Colorado Colorado Springs with 14 digs and 12 kills as the Mountain Lions secured a berth in the 2015 RMAC Tournament despite a 3-1 loss to Western State tonight in Paul Wright Gym. The Mountaineers (13-15, 10-7 RMAC) won in 25-20, 25-17, 20-25 and 25-20 sets against the Mountain Lions (15-11, 10-7 RMAC).

UCCS and Western State tied 16 times and exchanged the lead six times through 18-18 in the first set. The Mountaineers used a 6-1 run to reach set point at 24-19, and a kill from Catlett pushed the Mountain Lions to within four points at 24-20 before a UCCS attack sealed the first set for Western State at 25-20. A 7-1 run in the second set for Western State led to a 2-0 match lead for the Mountain Lions on a 25-17 set decision.

Catlett and Alyssa Brinton both made five kills in the third set as UCCS hit a match-high .290 to earn a 25-20 win against the Mountaineers and pull within 2-1 in the match. UCCS fought back to within a point at 15-14 in the third set after Western State put together a 6-1 run, but after the Mountaineers expanded the lead back to 17-14, the Mountain Lions couldn't pull back to within a point as Western State earned the 3-1 match win in the 25-20 decision in the fourth set.

Catlett added three service aces on offense in addition to her team-leading 12 kills. Brinton and Taylor Hamilton each made nine kills, and Hamilton made two blocks along with Miranda Sanchez. Natasha Habert recorded her seventh 20-dig match of the season and Morgan Evans made 34 assists in the two speciality roles for the Mountain Lions.

Even in the loss, UCCS was able to secure a conference tournament bid for the second straight season after Colorado State-Pueblo fell 3-1 to MSU Denver tonight. The Mountain Lions and Mountaineers are tied for sixth in the RMAC standings with one match left in the regular season next Saturday.

UCCS will host MSU Denver in a 5 p.m., contest on Nov. 14, in the Gallogly Events Center. The Mountain Lions won the first meeting between the teams 3-1 in Denver on Sept. 22.
