GOLDEN, Colo. – University of Colorado Colorado Springs junior
Michaela Mansfield tied the program record with her game-opening ninth goal of the season, but the historic season for the Mountain Lions came to an end in the RMAC Tournament Semifinals in a 2-1 loss to Fort Lewis at Stermole Stadium. UCCS (11-7-2) advanced to the semifinals for the first time in program history and finished with at least 10 wins for the second time in history.
Mansfield scored on a breakaway in the seventh minute of the game to put UCCS ahead of Fort Lewis 1-0. She tied the record set by Agnes Arnadottir in 2012 and Kristin Preble in 2010. It was career goal No. 19 for Mansfield, which also moved her alone into third in UCCS career records and two goals away from
Hannah Levett for second. Mansfield also improved her season point total to 21 for fifth in program history and moved into fourth in career records with 46 points.
Fort Lewis responded less than a minute later to tie the game at 1-1, and the score would remain tied at halftime.
Brandi Arsenault made six saves against the Skyhawks in the first half.
Fort Lewis scored the go-ahead goal early in the second off its only corner kick of the half. The Mountain Lions out-shot the Skyhawks 11-8 in the final half with three shots on goal, but couldn't put a tying goal past the RMAC Goalkeeper of the Year in the 2-1 postseason loss.
Arsenault finished the game with seven saves and concluded her senior season with 95 saves and six shutouts, both good for third in UCCS season records. She together a 0.96 goals-against average for the second-best in program history.
UCCS won 11 games for the second-most in program history, and won a playoff game for the first time in the team's fifth postseason appearance. Head Coach
Nichole Ridenour moved into eighth in RMAC coaching wins as she improved her career total to 67. The Mountain Lions had two All-RMAC First Team selections for the first time in program history, were ranked as high as No. 13 in Division II and had five RMAC Players of the Week during the season.
