Mountain Lions Open Home Season with 77-68 Win

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – University of Colorado Colorado Springs senior Alex Welsh recorded his third straight double-double and led both teams with 15 points and 13 rebounds as the Mountain Lions (2-4) defeated Ottawa 77-68 tonight in the Gallogly Events Center.

Student-athletes from both teams wore athletic tape with "GS" on them, honoring UCCS Police Officer Garrett Swasey who was killed in the line of duty on Friday. The game started with a moment of silence, led by Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak, and a salute by the officers from the UCCS Police Department during the National Anthem.

Brandon Malone's three-pointer on the first possession of the game was the start of a 9-3 run for the Mountain Lions during the first four minutes. The Braves took it's only lead of the afternoon eight minutes later at 19-18, but Kendall Godley converted on two free throws on the next possession to put UCCS up 20-19. The Mountain Lions outscored the Braves 22-4 in the paint in the first half and held a 36-28 lead at the break.

UCCS led by at least eight points for the entire second half and shot 57 percent from the field in the final 20 minutes. Tim Haas went five-of-six from the field in the half and one-of-two at the free throw line for all of his 13 points of the night in the second half for his best scoring performance since Dec. 13, 2014.

The Mountain Lions earned their sixth straight home win with their first 50-rebound performance of the season and first since Feb. 22, 2014. UCCS shot a season-best 50.9 percent from the field along with season-highs with eight streals and six blocked shots.

Welsh shot six-of-13 from the field with a pair of three-pointers and made two blocked shots along with Ian MacDonald. TreShawn Wilford made 10 assists and six steals along with eight points.

UCCS will finish the non-conference schedule on Monday in a 5:30 p.m., game against Sterling. The Warriors (2-5) plays Fort Hays State later tonight.
