UCCS Takes MSU Denver to Four Sets in RMAC Quarterfinals

DENVER – Taylor Hamilton led the University of Colorado Colorado Springs with 14 kills and three blocks as the Mountain Lions (16-12) fell to MSU Denver (20-10) in four sets in the 2015 RMAC Tournament Quarterfinals. Kim Catlett made 12 kills and 18 digs to finish her career with more than 1,300 kills and 1,400 digs.

UCCS opened the first set with a 4-1 lead in part with a kill and block assist from Alyssa Brinton. The Roadrunners responded later with a six-point run to take a 9-7 lead and the Mountain Lions retook the lead at 12-11 with back-to-back kills from Cassidy Bush. MSU Denver would retake the lead and hold it until Bush brought the Mountain Lions to set point on a service ace at 24-23. The Roadrunners scored the next three points to take a 1-0 match lead in a set that featured nine ties between the two teams.

The Mountain Lions built a 16-12 lead in the second set after a kill from Hamilton before MSU Denver took the lead on a 6-1 run for an 18-17 advantage. UCCS scored the next four points, with three of the points off of kills from Hamilton, Catlett and Lauren Brown, for a 21-18 lead, and reached set point at 24-20 after an ace from Morgan Evans. The Roadrunners scored three straight to pull within a point at 24-23 when a kill from Bush closed out the set for UCCS and evened the match at 1-1.

A three-point rally in the third set put the Mountain Lions ahead of MSU Denver at 10-9, but the Roadrunners went on a 13-4 run to build a 22-13 lead. MSU Denver took the 2-1 match lead on a 25-18 set decision.

UCCS held a 17-16 lead in the fourth set on a 6-1 run after a Bush's third service ace of the match in an effort to force a fifth set against the Roadrunners. MSU Denver scored the next five points to take a 21-17 advantage, and the Mountain Lions wouldn't be able to pull to within two points or less in a 25-19 fourth set decision in the 3-1 match loss.

Hamilton, a member of the All-RMAC Second Team, hit better than 40 percent for the seventh time this season with .414. She hit .556 in the third set with five of her 14 kills.

Catlett, who was on the All-RMAC First Team for the second time, added 12 kills and led the team with 18 digs. She finished her four-year Mountain Lion career with 1,310 kills and 1,406 digs and ranked second in UCCS career records for kills and fourth in digs.

Evans, a second team selection, finished her sophomore season with 41 assists tonight. Her 1,111 assists were 13 away from the UCCS sophomore season record and ranked sixth overall. She added four digs, two aces and a block for the Mountain Lions.

UCCS finished the season with 16 wins for the most since 2012 and tied for the seventh-most in program history. The Mountain Lions advanced to the RMAC Tournament for the second straight season and 10th time in history.
