ALAMOSA, Colo. – University of Colorado Colorado Springs senior midfielder
Brooke Tominello scored her first goal in the final minutes of regulation and senior goalkeeper
Brandi Arsenault earned her third shutout of the season as UCCS (7-2-1, 4-1-1 RMAC) defeated Adams State (4-2-3, 2-2-1 RMAC) in a 1-0 victory at the ASU Soccer Field. The win keeps the Mountain Lions in a tie for first in the RMAC standings after New Mexico Highlands defeated Colorado Christian this morning.
The Grizzlies started the game with a strong possession in the opening five minutes and held the Mountain Lions to no shots in the first 11 minutes of the game. Arsenault made her three saves of the game within the first 28 minutes of the game and UCCS took control for the remainder of the half with a 9-0 shot advantage in the final 17 minutes of the period. The Adams State goalkeeper made five saves in that stretch to keep it a 0-0 game at halftime.
Adams State would put four shots in the second half with none on goal, but except for a wide shot in the 49th minute, the Mountain Lions wouldn't be able to record another shot until nearly 20 minutes later. A foul on the Grizzlies with three minutes to play would setup the ball for
Taylor Braden, who found Tominello for the game-winning shot with 2:55 to play.
Dana Shellhorn would get a shot on goal with 50 seconds to play, but the Mountain Lions didn't allow any shots for the Grizzlies in the final seconds in the 1-0 road win.
UCCS won its seventh game of the season today to surpass last year's win total. The Mountain Lions are on their first three-game winning streak since a six-game streak to open the 2013 season. Today's game marked the halfway point of the RMAC schedule for UCCS with five games left in the conference schedule.
Tominello's goal was her first since 2013 and it moved her into a tie for eighth in UCCS career points with 20. Braden moved into a tied for seventh in UCCS records with her seventh career assist and Arsenault moved alone into fourth with her third career shutout.
UCCS will travel to Durango, Colo., for a Sunday game against Fort Lewis. The Skyhawks (6-2-1, 4-1 RMAC) are one point behind UCCS in the conference standings after a 1-0 victory today against Western State.
