UCCS Win Streak Ends at #17 Colorado Mines

GOLDEN, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs opened tonight with a 25-19 for the ninth straight set win, but No. 17 Colorado School of Mines took the next three sets as the Mountain Lions (12-6, 7-2 RMAC) dropped their first match in three weeks in a 3-1 decision against the Orediggers (12-4, 6-2 RMAC). Colorado Mines won in 19-25, 25-21, 25-14 and 25-12 set scores.

UCCS hit .308 as a team in the first set and kept Colorado Mines from stringing together more than two points at a time to take a 1-0 match lead with a 25-19 win. Kim Catlett recorded six of her 12 kills in the first set with a .500 hitting percentage and the Mountain Lions held the Orediggers to .091 hitting in the win.

The second set featured 10 ties and six lead changes. Colorado Mines took its first timeout of the set at 19-19, and the teams exchanged points to reach 20-20. The Orediggers scored the next two points for a 22-20 lead as UCCS took its first timeout of the set. Colorado Mines scored two more points after the timeout to reach set point at 24-20 and the Mountain Lions held off set point with a kill from Miranda Sanchez. The Orediggers closed out the set on the next point to even the match on a 25-21 set decision.

Colorado Mines used a strong offense in the third and fourth sets to break the 1-1 match tie with 25-14 and 25-12 scores. 

Taylor Hamilton led the Mountain Lions with 15 kills to match her best performance of the season in a four-set match. She also led UCCS with three blocks on defense. Catlett's 12 kills extended her streak of matches with double-digit kills to six matches and she added 11 digs on defense. Morgan Evans made 41 assists and Catlett added three more for the Mountain Lions.

UCCS will return home for a weekend with the two schools from New Mexico. The Mountain Lions open with Western New Mexico on Friday at 7 p.m. The Mustangs are first in the RMAC with an undefeated 8-0 conference record while UCCS is in third, pending results from throughout the conference tonight.
