Alex Welsh led the Mountain Lions with 22 points and nine rebounds as No. 2 UCCS improved to 14-0 in an 86-72 victory against Western State (3-10 / 2-7 RMAC) tonight in the Third Annual Downtown Classic.
Derrick White added 15 points and eight rebounds.
The Mountain Lions trailed for only 83 seconds early in the game before a seven-point run put UCCS ahead 11-6 with 16:50 left in the first half. The Mountaineers made it a one-point game at 15-14 on a three-pointer at the 13:09 mark, but UCCS responded with 9-2 run during the next three minutes. The Mountain Lions shot 54 percent from the field in the first half and held a 49-29 halftime advantage.
UCCS built as much as a 26-point lead five minutes into the second half and led by at least 15 points until the final 1:31 of the game. Welsh scored 14 of his 22 points in the second period as the Mountain Lions claimed their fifth straight double-digit victory.
Welsh surpassed the 20-point mark for the second time in the last three games and was a rebound away from his fifth double-double of the season. He improved his career scoring total to 943 points and is now 57 points away from becoming the eighth student-athlete in program history with 1,000 career points.

Kendall Godley each added nine points for the RMAC's top scoring offense and combined to shoot 65 percent from the field. White added five steals on defense to go with his 15 points and eight rebounds.
UCCS will close out a three-game home stretch on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m., against Colorado Mesa. The Mavericks (11-4 / 6-3 RMAC) fell to Colorado State-Pueblo 80-67 tonight. The game will return to the Gallogly Events Center on campus, and admission will be free for all fans.
