Abby Kirchoff went a perfect 12-of-12 at the free throw line and finished with a game-high 28 points as the University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's basketball team earned an 89-53 victory against New Mexico Highlands tonight. The Mountain Lions (18-3 / 13-2 RMAC) moved alone in first in the RMAC standings after Colorado Mesa's lost to Colorado Christian.Â
The Mountain Lions put together a 22-1 run for nearly 10 minutes in the first half to flip an 8-6 deficit into a 28-9 lead. UCCS held New Mexico Highlands (4-15 / 3-12 RMAC) to 30 percent from the field in the first half to take a 40-21 advantage at halftime.
Kirchoff made eight of her 12 free throws as a result of an altercation that resulted in one personal foul, three technical fouls and eight ejections. Two Cowgirls received technicals and were ejected,
Brittany Hernandez received a technical and was ejected, and five more Cowgirls who left the bench were ejected but not charged a foul. UCCS built a 59-25 lead after the free throws and led by at least 30 points for the remainder of the game.
Kirchoff moved into seventh in UCCS single season records with 441 points this season. She hasn't missed a free throw since Jan. 17, a span of four games, and is second in the RMAC with 90.5 percent at the free throw line this season.
Kellie Krueger led the Mountain Lions and matched her season-high with eight rebounds. The Mountain Lions recorded 52 rebounds, its most since Dec. 20 against Western New Mexico.
UCCS will reuturn to the road next Saturday for a 5:30 p.m., game at Colorado State-Pueblo. The ThunderWolves (11-8 / 9-6 RMAC) fell to Western New Mexico tonight 56-51.
