Box Score COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Defending national player of the week
Brittany Hernandez scored 13 points and brought down seven rebounds to lead No. 25 University of Colorado Colorado Springs to a 69-66 win in overtime against Colorado State-Pueblo (7-4 / 5-2 RMAC). The Mountain Lions (11-2 / 6-1 RMAC) moved alone into second in the conference standings and are a half-game behind Colorado Mesa.
UCCS led 32-28 at halftime, but CSU-Pueblo took the lead with a five-point run in the first minute of the second half. The Mountain Lions built a 15-point lead at 53-38 on an 18-0 run with seven minutes to play, but the ThunderWolves responded with their own 18-3 run to narrow the game back down to a pair of points at 56-54 with 2:26 to play in regulation. Gabby Ramirez - her fourth of the night - pushed the UCCS lead back to five points at 59-54, but CSU-Pueblo tied the game with 23 seconds to play to force overtime at 59-59.
The Mountain Lions took a three-point advantage in the first minute of overtime, but the ThunderWolves tied it back up with a three-pointer at the 2:56 mark of the period. CSU-Pueblo took a 64-62 lead on a steal-and-score opportunity 17 seconds later.
Abby Kirchoff pushed her scoring mark to a team-high 16 points on a three-pointer on the next UCCS possession to put the Mountain Lions ahead at 65-64, but the ThunderWolves regained the lead with 47 seconds to play at 66-65.
Jessika Kienitz scored her only points of the game on a three-pointer with 35 seconds left, and Ramirez made it a three-point game at 69-66 on a free throw with 5.0 seconds top lay. CSU-Pueblo got off a final three-point shot off of the right side of the basket, but the rebound was collected by Kirchoff as the buzzer sounded.
Kirchoff led four Mountain Lions in double figures with her 16 points and added four steals on defense. Ramirez scored 15 points, helped by four 3-pointers, and Fisher scored 12 points in her best offensive output in nearly a month.
UCCS will remain in Colorado Springs next weekend for the Third Annual Downtown Classic on Jan. 9 against Western State (4-8 / 3-5 RMAC). Tip-off from the historic City Auditorium is set for 5:30 p.m.
