Welsh Closing in on 1,000 Points at Black Hills State

SPEARFISH, S.D. – University of Colorado Colorado Springs junior forward Alex Welsh needs 11 points to become the eighth Mountain Lion in program history with 1,000 career points, and will get the chance at it on Friday as No. 16 UCCS (15-2 / 9-2 RMAC) take on Black Hills State (6-12 / 4-7 RMAC) at 7:30 p.m., in the Donald E. Young Center.

Welsh is eighth in UCCS career scoring records with 989 points and fourth in rebounding records with 477. He is on pace to finish eighth in program records with 7.5 rebounds per game, one spot behind Derrick White's 7.6 average.

White is leading Division II with 435 points this season and is already No. 10 in UCCS season records with 11 regular season games to play. He is third in the nation with 25.6 points per game, a mark that would surpass his scoring average record from last season. White holds the career record with 1,496 points and is seventh with 398 career rebounds. He needs one more to tie Mike Lallier for sixth in UCCS record books.

UCCS is one win away from tying for second for the most victories in a season, a mark from the 2006-07 season that was the program record until last year. The Mountain Lions are also on pace to break last year's scoring average record with 89.2 points per game, an average that leads the RMAC this season.

The Mountain Lions swept Black Hills State in both games last year, but had to go to overtime when the game was played in Spearfish. White went 21-of-24 at the free throw line in that game to finish with 32 points, and Welsh scored 23 with Dalton Patten adding 22 points and 15 rebounds.

The Yellow Jackets have won two of their last three games. Four Black Hills State student-athletes are averaging at least eight points per game, led by Myles Hendy with 10.2 per game.

Fans can follow tonight's action with live stats through Black Hills State, live audio through UCCS and live video through America One Sports. Fans can also watch the game for free in Clyde's on the first floor of the University Center.
