Abby Kirchoff scored 28 points and
Brittany Hernandez recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 14 rebounds and 12 points as No. 23 University of Colorado Colorado Springs won its seventh straight game with an 80-66 victory at Colorado Christian tonight. The Mountain Lions (15-2 / 10-1 RMAC) out-rebounded the Cougars (6-11 / 6-5 RMAC) 51-35 and are first in the RMAC standings at the halfway point of the conference season.
UCCS put together a 16-1 run early in the game to open a 19-5 lead against Colorado Christian with 8 minutes and 43 seconds left in the half. A 10-3 Cougar run brought Colorado Christian within seven points four minutes later, but the Mountain Lions enjoyed a 12-point advantage at halftime after Kirchoff beat the buzzer with a three-pointer.
The Mountain Lions expanded the lead to 19 points at 50-31 with 14:11 left to play but Colorado Christian scored the next 11 points to make it a 50-42 game with 12:28 to play. UCCS responded with a 12-4 run and led by double-digits for the remainder of the game.
Kirchoff's performance was her ninth 20-point game of the season and pushed her UCCS career record total to 1,679 points. Hernandez recorded her third-best rebounding performance of the season and best since 16 boards against Western New Mexico on Dec. 20. She added two blocked shots on defense for her fourth straight game with multiple blocks.
The 16-rebound advantage tonight was the seventh double-digit rebounding margin of the season for UCCS. Ten of the 11 Mountain Lions who played recorded multiple rebounds tonight.
UCCS will remain on the road for a pair of games next weekend in South Dakota and Nebraska. The Mountain Lions will open the trip at Black Hills State on Friday and conclude a four-game road swing next Saturday at Chadron State.
