Live VideoCOLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The eighth-ranked University of Colorado Colorado Springs will continue its best start in program history tonight in a top-10 national game against fifth-ranked Colorado School of Mines tonight in Lockridge Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m., in Golden, Colo.
It's the second straight men's game between a pair of top 10 national teams after Mines faced then-No. 10 MSU Denver last Saturday night. The Orediggers defeated the Roadrunners 59-57 in overtime on a buzzer beater to remain undefeated at 13-0 and 9-0 in the RMAC.
UCCS will be looking to rebound after a 100-92 home loss to Colorado Mesa last Saturday night. It was the first loss of the season for the Mountain Lions to end a program-record 14-game winning streak to start the season. A win for UCCS would move it into a tie for first in the RMAC standings, with a head-to-head win, in the only regular season meeting between the teams.
The Mountain Lions won the last meeting between the two teams in a 75-70 win in the RMAC Shootout Semifinal last March in Denver. UCCS used a 15-2 run to close out the game in the final five minutes to claim the victory and snap a nine-game losing streak to the Orediggers going into the game.
Both teams used strong field goal shooting to reach tonight's game with a combined 27-1 record. Mines is fourth in Division II with 52.7 percent from the field, while UCCS is No. 14 with 51.1 percent. UCCS has the seventh-ranked scoring offense in the nation with 90.9 points per game, a mark that is on pace to break the current program record by seven points per game. Mines only averages 77.5 points per game, but is among the top 30 teams in the nation in scoring defense in allowing 63.8 points per game.
Derrick White is sixth in Division II with 24.5 points per game and has surpassed 30 points in five games this season. He is on pace to break his own program scoring average record by more than two points per game and has the second-best career scoring average at 20.5 points per game in program history.
Alex Welsh needs 39 points to become the eighth Mountain Lion in program history with 1,000 career points. He is eighth in career records with 961 points, and his 459 career rebounds also rank him fourth in UCCS records. Welsh needs 39 rebounds to tie for third in program history.
Both White and Welsh are shooting better than 57 percent from the field this season and rank in the top 50 for Division II. White is fourth in the nation with 111 made free throws and sixth with 122 made field goals.
The Orediggers use a balanced offense with four student-athletes averaging 10 or more points. Senior Brian Muller averaged 15.5 points per game with 49 percent shooting from the three-point line. Caleb Waitsman averaged a team-leading 8.3 rebounds with his 13.5 points along with 60 percent from the field. Colorado Mines is No. 13 in Division II in fewest turnovers this season.
