Josh Berntsson scored his first collegiate goal in the 43rd minute to put the University of Colorado Colorado Springs on the board right before halftime, but Eastern New Mexico (1-1) claimed the 3-1 victory today against the Mountain Lions (0-1-1).
The Greyhounds challenged the Mountain Lion defense early with four shots in the first 10 minutes, with two of them on goal. Eastern New Mexico converted on its fifth shot in the 12th minute to take the early 1-0 lead against UCCS.
The Mountain Lion offense put pressure on the Greyhounds midway through the first period with fresh legs on substitutes
Sebastian Hertzberg and
Justin Miller. Eastern New Mexico took the 2-0 lead off of substitute Roberto Zatarain in the 42nd minute, and then Berntsson's goal 63 seconds later made it a 2-1 game at halftime.
The Greyhounds added another goal with just less than 10 minutes to play off a deflection to start off a flurry of late activity. A pair of red cards against Eastern New Mexico help set up a penalty kick for
Cort Searls, but the Greyhound goalkeeper made the save to keep the game at 3-1. With a two-man advantage, UCCS took three shots in the final five minutes, but the goalkeeper made the final save with 71 seconds left to preserve the 3-1 decision.
UCCS outshot Eastern New Mexico 10-7 in the second half, with four coming from
Jake McAllister. Hertzberg made two shots on goal and three overall.
Peter Vogrin made six saves as goalkeeper.
The Mountain Lions will be on the road again next weekend for a regional game at Midwestern State on Saturday. UCCS will close the nonconference schedule next Monday at Southern Nazarene.
