White Sets UCCS Career Scoring Record in Win Against Skyhawks

Box Score COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - University of Colorado Colorado Springs junior guard Derrick White broke the Mountain Lion career scoring record on his final free throw of the night to lead No. 8 UCCS to an 85-78 win against Fort Lewis tonight in the RMAC opener. White scored 37 points tonight, one off of his career-high.

The Skyhawks led by as many as 12 points in the first half and held a 46-43 halftime advantage. The Mountain Lions took the lead early in the second half with three straight transition dunks and layups in a span of 32 seconds for the 52-49 advantage. Fort Lewis put together a 6-0 run to take a four-point lead at 60-56 with 12:24 to play, and Tim Haas put UCCS back ahead at 66-65 with a pair of free throws with nine minutes to play.

Fort Lewis would retake a one-point lead a minute later and the Mountain Lions would tie it up on a free throw from Alex Welsh with 7:44 to play. White stole the ball on the next Skyhawk possession and earned the layup and the free throw to put UCCS ahead 70-67. Fort Lewis tied it again wth five minutes to play, but the Mountain Lions wouldn't trail the rest of the game and converted on five of their final six free throws down the stretch to secure the seventh win of the season.

White scored the record-setting point with 14 seconds to play and was 10-of-11 at the free throw line and 13-of-23 from the field. Tonight was the seventh 30-point game of his career and the 37 points tied for fourth in UCCS single-game records. Welsh recorded his fifth game of the season with a 50+ field goal percentage with a seven-of-13 performance on his way to 18 points. Tim Bilingsley scored 15 points to close out the offensive leaders for the Mountain Lions. White finished a rebound short of a double-double and added another six steals on defense.

The Mountain Lions will continue the best start in program history on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., againts Adams State. The Grizzlies (3-1 / 0-1 RMAC) dropped a 90-81 game at Colorado State-Pueblo tonight.
