UCCS Completes Comeback to Claim 84-81 Win

Box Score LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's basketball team overcame a 13-point second half deficit with an 15-4 run late in the period to claim an 84-81 road win at New Mexico Highlands tonight. Brittany Hernandez led the Mountain Lions (9-2 / 4-1 RMAC) with 29 points and 12 rebounds.

UCCS scored the first five points and held a lead for nearly the first seven minutes when the Cowgirls (3-6 / 2-3 RMAC) assembled a 10-2 run to take an 18-13 lead with 10:56 left in the first half. Highlands shot 54 percent from the field and outrebounded the Mountain Lions 17-11 during the first 20 minutes to take a 39-31 halftime lead.

The Mountain Lions scored the first five points of the second half to close the Highlands lead down to three points at 39-36. The Cowgirls responded and built a 64-51 lead with 10:36 to play, and led by double-digits again at 69-58 two minutes later.

Highlands had a nine-point lead at 72-63 before a pair of free throws from Tori Fisher sparked the comeback run for UCCS at the 6:10 mark. The 15-4 run lasted three-and-a-half minutes to put the Mountain Lions ahead at 78-76 with 2:41 to play on a jumper from Hernandez. She scored the final four points for the Mountain Lions in the final two minutes, all at the free throw line, to secure the road win for UCCS.

Hernandez led both teams with a season-high 29 points and recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 12 rebounds. She recorded her fourth straight game with a 50 percent or better from the field with an 11-of-16 performance.

Kirchoff recorded her third straight 20-point game and seventh in the last eight games with 21 points tonight. Jessika Kienitz added 11 points. Kirchoff made a season-high five steals and Kienitz added a season-high three blocked shots on defense.

UCCS will close out the 2014 calendar year in a 5:30 p.m., game at Western New Mexico on Saturday. The Mustangs (4-4 / 2-3 RMAC) lost 63-55 to Colorado State-Pueblo tonight.
