Kendall Godley provided the first University of Colorado Colorado Springs lead of the game with eight seconds before halftime and the No. 4 Mountain Lions opened the second half on a 12-2 run to take a 99-71 victory at New Mexico Highlands (1-7 / 1-4 RMAC) tonight. The victory extended the current winning streak to a program record 11 wins and surpassed a 10-game win streak from last season.
The Cowboys started the game with a nine-point run and held off three ties from the Mountain Lions until Godley's three-pointer before halftime. New Mexico Highlands shot 50 percent from the field and went five-of-nine at the three-point line, but trailed 40-39 at the break.
After a missed jumper on the opening possession of the second half, UCCS scored on eight straight possessions to build a 15-point lead four minutes into the second half at 60-45. The Cowboys cut the Mountain Lion lead down to seven points with 9:33 to play, but UCCS quickly pushed the lead back to 10 points and led by double digits for the remainder of the game.
White went 12-of-12 at the free throw line and 10-of-15 from the field for 33 points and came one rebound short of his third double-double in the last four games.
Tim Billingsley scored 12 points in the first half and finished with a season-high 19.
Alex Welsh added 13 and
Kendall Godley led the bench with 12 points.
TreShawn Wilford and
Darius Pardner each added 10 points to round out the leading Mountain Lion scorers.
UCCS shot 61 percent from the field in the second half and held Highlands to 39 percent. The Mountain Lions out-rebounded the Cowboys by 14 boards at 43-29 and finished with a double-digit rebounding advantage for the third time since Dec. 6. UCCS has scored more than 90 points in six games this season and leads the RMAC in scoring offense.
The Mountain Lions will finish the 2014 calendar year in a 7:30 p.m., game on Saturday at Western New Mexico. The Mustangs (0-9 / 0-5 RMAC) lost to Colorado State-Pueblo 88-69 tonight.
