Mountain Lions Take on Colorado Mesa in RMAC Semifinal

11/7/2014 11:07:00 AM

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs was the last team to beat Colorado Mesa University, and tonight, the Mountain Lions will have the chance to end a 12-game winning streak for the Mavericks in the 2014 RMAC Men's Soccer Semifinal at Walker Field. UCCS (10-8-1) and Colorado Mesa (15-2-1) will face off at 7 p.m., in Grand Junction, Colo.

These two teams split the regular season meetings, with the home team winning each game. UCCS won 3-0 on Sept. 21, while Colorado Mesa won 1-0 on Oct. 12. The loss by the Mavericks to UCCS was their last loss, and the win streak has allowed them to climb to No. 9 in the national rankings. The two teams have also split their last two meetings in the postseason in 2012 and 2013, with the home team advancing in both games.

UCCS advanced to its second semifinal game in the last three seasons with a 5-4 comeback victory in overtime against Fort Lewis. It was the largest comeback victory since 1998, which also marked the last season the Mountain Lions played in the RMAC championship game. UCCS has scored 11 goals in its last three games, and will face a defense tonight that has allowed only 10 goals all season.

Mathew Cox has scored four goals in the last three games and scored the first two goals in the comeback against the Skyhawks on Wednesday. He moved into a tie for No. 10 in UCCS career records in the game. Roberts goal at 3:34 into the first overtime was the fifth-fastest overtime goal in program history and the game-winner moved him into third in UCCS career records.

A win tonight would mark the most wins in a season since a 12-win season in 1999. A win would also move Head Coach Johnnie Keen into first in UCCS career playoff victories.

Colorado Mesa is in line to potentially host NCAA postseason games as the No. 1 team in Wednesday's NCAA Division II South Central Region. The Mavericks have won eight games in 1-0 contests, and 11 of their 15 wins have been decided by a goal in either 1-0 or 2-1 victories. Blake Carlson was named the RMAC Defensive Player of the Year for Colorado Mesa, while Roy Abergil has scored the game-winner in seven games to tie for the Division II national lead.

UCCS fans will be admitted for free to tonight's game by showing either a student ID card, or by wearing UCCS gear. Fans unable to make the trip to Grand Junction can follow the action with live stats for free and with live video streaming through America One Sports.
