COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's basketball team will go for its fifth 2-0 start in program history tonight when the Mountain Lions (1-0) take on Eastern New Mexico (0-1) on the second day of the Tony Corbetta Classic at Colorado School of Mines. UCCS and Eastern will tip off at 4 p.m., at Lockridge Arena.
UCCS won 93-90 last night against the Heartland Conference preseason favorite Lubbock Christian after trailing by as many as 13 points in the first half.
Abby Kirchoff moved into second in the all-time UCCS career scoring records with 26 points, and was a perfect 13-of-13 from the free throw line in the process. She tied for the team lead with eight rebounds with
Brittany Hernandez, who also scored 20 points in her Mountain Lion debut.
Eastern New Mexico led 36-27 at halftime against the Orediggers last night, but shot 26 percent from the field in the second half in a 60-58 loss to Colorado Mines. Tori Tucker scored 22 points to lead the Lady Zias and scored 18 of her points from the three-point line.
The Mountain Lions were one of seven RMAC teams to win their season-opener last night, and led the winning teams in points, three-point percentage and free-throw percentage. Kirchoff, Hernandez and
Gabby Ramirez each rank in the top 10 in scoring in the early conference statistical leaders.
