Mathew Cox scored the game-winning goal in the 97th minute off a pass from
Austin Bell to lead the University of Colorado Colorado Springs to a 2-1 victory tonight against Colorado State-Pueblo. It was the sixth win for the Mountain Lions (4-6-1 / 3-4 RMAC) in the last seven games against the ThunderWolves (2-9 / 1-6 RMAC) since 2011.
CSU-Pueblo scored first in the 24th minute and held a 4-1 shots on goal advantage by halftime. The UCCS defense held the ThunderWolves to no shots on goal for the rest of the night and allowed the Mountain Lion offense to take a 4-0 shots on goal advantage in the rest of the night.
James Roberts scored his seventh goal of the season with a shot to the right side of the net and moved into second among RMAC players in goals scored. He also tied for eighth in UCCS records with career goal No. 18 tonight. The Mountain Lions controlled the game for the final 13 minutes of regulation with two shots and two corner kick opportunities and no shots for the ThunderWolves in the span.
The pressure continued into overtime with the first shot of the period coming from
Luke Chapman in the sixth minute of overtime. Bell found Cox on the right side of the goal 40 seconds later for the game-winning goal and Cox's second goal of the season.
David Meyer made three saves, all in the first half, at goalkeeper for the Mountain Lions. He is third in the conference with a .824 goals-against average and with 3.67 saves per game.
UCCS will be off until Sunday for a noon road game at Colorado Mesa. The Mountain Lions defeated the Mavericks 3-0 in the first meeting in Colorado Springs on Sept. 21.
