Box Score COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – After the University of Colorado Colorado Springs and Adams State University played to a scoreless tie in the first 45 minutes, the Mountain Lions continued to press and scored four goals in the second half for a 4-0 win against the Grizzlies today at Mountain Lion Stadium.
David Meyer earned his third shutout of the season with four saves, and helped preserve the shutout during a flurry of four Adams State shots within a 10-second span in front of the box in the second half.
Cort Searls,
James Roberts,
J.R. Calhoun and
Josh Berntsson each scored goals, with Searls and Calhoun scoring their first goals of the season today.
UCCS controlled the offensive tempo and possession for a majority of the first half, but struggled to turn the possession into scoring opportunities. The Mountain Lions held only a 4-3 advantage in overall shots and were even with the Grizzlies in shots on goal.
Searls opened up the scoring six minutes into the second half on an assist from
Mathew Cox, which was followed less than five minutes later on Roberts' sixth goal of the season. The goal moved Roberts into a tie for ninth in UCCS career records with 17 goals and put the Mountain Lions ahead 2-0 with 35 minutes left to play.
Calhoun scored an unassisted goal from 35 yards out in the 79th minute after a shot from
Jake McAllister rebounded off a Grizzly defender. Berntsson scored just more than six minutes later after
Marshall Hiner took the ball down the left sideline and passed it in to
Chris Welch on the end line, who then sent it over to Berntsson 10 yards off the left side of the net.
The Mountain Lions out-shot Adams State 13-6 in the second half to go along with the scoring advantage. The win improved UCCS to 8-1-1 all-time against the Grizzlies.
UCCS will be on the road on Wednesday, Oct. 8, for a 7 p.m., game at Colorado State-Pueblo. The ThunderWolves (2-8 / 1-5 RMAC) lost to Fort Lewis 2-1 today.
