Mathew Cox recorded a pair of goals in a dominating game for the University of Colorado Colorado Springs in a 6-2 win for the Mountain Lions against Colorado Christian University at Trailblazer Stadium. The victory moves UCCS into a tie for third in the RMAC standings with three games left in today's conference schedule.
It was the fifth straight win for UCCS (9-7-1 / 8-5 RMAC) to match the second-longest streak in program history. The six goals today tied for seventh in UCCS single-game records and the 15 shots on goal tied for sixth.
Cox scored the opening goal of the game in the fourth minute from 10 yards out after passes from
James Roberts and
Taylor Ferguson. UCCS held a 3-0 halftime lead after goals from
Austin Bell in the 23rd minute and Roberts in the 34th minute. The goal for Roberts moved him into a tie for sixth in UCCS career records with 22, and his 11 goals this season is tied for fourth in season records.
Cort Searls scored his second goal of the season on a pass from Roberts in the 53rd minute. Cox added his second goal of the game 2 minutes and 33 seconds later to build a 5-0 Mountain Lion early in the second half.
Sebastian Hertzberg scored in the 64th minute, less than a minute after Colorado Christian scored its first goal of the game, and the Cougars added another goal in the 79th minute in a 6-2 Mountain Lion victory.
It was the third win of the conference season by a four-goal margin for the Mountain Lions and the ninth straight win in the series against the Cougars.
David Meyer lowered his goals-against average to 0.74 and is on pace to break the single-season record of 0.87 set by All-American Greg Meyer in 1997.
UCCS will close out the 2014 regular season on Sunday at a noon game against Colorado State-Pueblo. The Mountain Lions are already in the conference tournament, but will continue to play for the chance to host a first-round game or receive a first-round bye in next week's tournament.
