UCCS Improves to 3-0 With Win in Straight Sets Against Incarnate Word

CANYON, Texas - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs volleyball team improves to 3-0 on the season with a win in straight sets against Incarnate Word (25-18, 25-23, 30-28).

Incarnate word jumped out to a quick lead early in the first set, before the Mountain Lion offense found its rhythm and went on a 10-2 run.  

Setter Grace Gordon picked up right where she left off in yesterday's career-high performance as she led the Mountain Lions with 11 assists, 3 digs and one kill in the first set.  Gordon finished with a match-high 32 assists and added 12 digs and two kills. 

Jordan Banich and Emily Whitelaw each led the Mountain Lions with three kills in the first set. Banich also added three digs, once service ace and one block to help aid UCCS to a 25-18 win.

The Mountain Lions were down 14-12, midway through the second set, when Kim Catlett caught fire and scored three consecutive kills to give UCCS the lead. Both teams traded points for the remainder of the set, which allowed UCCS to take a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-23 win in the set. 

Catlett recorded six kills in the set and had a match-high eight kills at the intermission with a hitting percent of .375.  Catlett finished with a well balanced performance including eight kills, five digs, three blocks, two assists and one service ace. 

The Mountain Lion's Libero, Heather Sanders had her best set of the season in the second as she recorded 12 digs and once service ace. She had a match-high and career-high 18 digs after the second set. Sanders added one more dig in the match and finished with a career-high 19. 

The third set proved to be the most closely contested with 13 ties, including a 25-25 score. The Mountain Lions battled hard, and closed out the set 30-28 to complete the match win in straight sets. 

Banich led the Mountain Lions in the final stretch with seven of her match-high 13 digs, and three of her four blocks coming in the third set. Banich also added eight digs and two service aces in the match. 

Kristen Sciacca also had three blocks in the final set and finished with a match-high five blocks, with seven kills, and hit .429.  

Up Next: UCCS will be back in action at 6:30 tonight the final match in the BritKare Lady Buff Classic as the Mountain Lions defend their undefeated record against tournament host, West Texas A&M (2-0).
