UCCS Wins Second Straight with 2-0 Victory Against Adams State

ALAMOSA, Colo. - After playing a close game during the first half, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's soccer team dominated the second half with two early goals and a shot advantage of 15-4 as the Mountain Lions (3-4 / 2-2 RMAC) remained unbeaten against Adams State (1-6 / 1-3) with a 2-0 victory today at the ASU Lacrosse and Soccer Field.

The victory moves the Mountain Lions in a tie for fourth in the RMAC standings. It also moves the all-time record against the Grizzlies to 6-0-1.

UCCS took advantage on offense early in the game with the first three shots in the first 20 minutes. The Grizzlies controlled the offense during the final 25 minutes with four shots, including one on target that was blocked by Mountain Lion goalkeeper Brandon Costa, but both teams entered halftime in a 0-0 tie.

The Mountain Lions controlled the second half from the start, with Mash Shaswar shooting from the left side within the first two minutes of the period. The second shot of the half by Brett Drefs beat the goalkeeper after a pass from James Roberts to break the stalemate.

A foul and yellow card against Adams State shortly after the ball was put back into play allowed a quick second goal for the Mountain Lions, this time by Brandon Vongphackdy. Sebastian Hertzberg picked up his team-leading third assist on the season on Vongphackdy's first goal of the season.

The Mountain Lion defense didn't allow a shot by the Grizzlies for nearly the first 15 minutes of the second half and didn't allow a shot on goal until the final six minutes of the game. The offense out-shot Adams State 15-4 in the period and kept the ball on the Grizzly half with six corner kicks, compared to one for Adams State.

Seven Mountain Lions finished with multiple shots, including a career-high three shots for Hertzberg and three shots for Vongphackdy and Drefs. It was the first shutout of the season for Costa and fifth of his career.

Up Next: UCCS returns home for a 5 p.m. contest on Friday with No. 23 Colorado Mines. The Orediggers are unbeaten (2-0-2) in conference action this season and are coming off an 8-0 victory against Colorado Christian on Sunday.
