UCCS Takes on Colorado Mesa in Opening Round of RMAC Tournament at Home

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - For the first time in eight appearances in the RMAC Postseason Tournament, the fourth-seeded University of Colorado Colorado Springs (8-8-1) will play at home in the tournament when the Mountain Lions host fifth seed Colorado Mesa (8-6-4) in a 7:30 p.m. contest at Mountain Lion Stadium.

UCCS is making an appearance in the tournament for the second straight season and making back-to-back tournament appearances for the first time since the late 1990s. Colorado Mesa is making its second tournament appearance in program history and the first since 2011.

The Mountain Lions will be looking to avenge an earlier 1-0 loss to the Mavericks at home on Oct. 7. UCCS finished with four corner kicks in the game, compared to one for the Mavericks, but couldn't convert on the opportunities for the set plays while Colorado Mesa scored on the second shot of a possession midway through the second half.

UCCS finished the regular season with a winning record at home for the second straight season, with 75 percent of the victories coming in a shutout. Brandon Costa has put together four shutout performances this season and anchored a defense that has allowed just more than one goal per home game.

A win tonight would put the Mountain Lions in the RMAC semifinals for the first time since 2001, when only four teams qualified for the tournament. UCCS has participated in a penalty kick situation only twice in its previous seven trips to the conference tournament, and advanced once during the 1997 tournament.

Tonight's game will be available only through live stats and updates through the Mountain Lion twitter account, @GoMountainLions. Admission for tonight's doubleheader is good for both games. The first 200 UCCS students will enter the doubleheader for free with their student ID.
