UCCS overcomes two-goal deficit, wins on Rather's final-minute goal

LAKEWOOD, Colo. - Freshman Hannah Rather scored with just 54 seconds remaining to complete a remarkable comeback by the University of Colorado Colorado Springs as the Mountain Lions beat the Colorado Christian Cougars 4-3 Friday afternoon at CCU Soccer Field.

Danielle Gershon's second goal of the match gave the Cougars a 3-1 lead at the 66:14 mark. At that point, UCCS coach Nichole Ridenour reinserted Kelly Schroeder as goalkeeper. Schroeder, who allowed one goal in the first half, was replaced at halftime by Jessica Taylor.

Candice Buckles scored an unassisted goal in the 71st minute to cut the deficit to one. Six minutes later, Kristin Preble evened the score with a goal off a Jessica Escobedo pass. It was the second goal of the match for Preble, who scored off a Rather assist to tie the match at one in the 54th minute.

Rather netted the game-winner at the 89:06 mark.

All four of the Mountain Lions' goals came within a 35:43 window in the second half.

Colorado Christian (2-8, 1-5 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) opened the scoring with a Krista Hoffer goal in the 19th minute. After Preble tied it, Gershon scored back-to-back goals, the first in the 60th minute and the second in the 67th minute. Ciara Meredith had two assists and Abby Larsen had one.

UCCS (5-3, 2-3 RMAC) outshot Colorado Christian 21-8, but had just an 8-5 edge in shots on goal.
