GOLDEN, Colo. - The Colorado School of Mines Orediggers blocked 22 Mountain Lion attacks, the most ever against a University of Colorado Colorado Springs volleyball team, to take a 3-2 (25-20, 22-25, 25-21, 21-25, 15-9) decision Tuesday evening at Lockridge Arena.

Sam Johnson and Holly Hutchison each assisted on nine blocks to lead the Oredigger front line. The previous high for blocks against a UCCS team was 21 by Mesa State on Sept. 27, 2003.

UCCS middle blockers Nikki Kinzer and Amy Einspahr each had 13 kills. Einspahr, seeing her first significant action of the season, participated in eight of the Mountain Lions' 13 blocks. The transfer from Northeastern Junior College had a solo block and assisted on seven others. She also hit a match-best .571.

Sonja Johnson added 12 kills for UCCS (9-6, 4-2 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference). Johnson and Alex Wood each had 12 digs, while Cindy Bathelt had seven kills, six assisted blocks and 47 assists.

Jackie Stabell led Mines (10-5, 4-2 RMAC) with 17 kills. Melanie Wannamaker added 15 kills, while Johnson had 13.

UCCS quickly went down 8-1 to start the first set. The Mountain Lions faced match point at 24-17 and fought it off three times before succumbing 25-20.

A 7-1 run puts UCCS at 24-19. Mines fought off three match points before UCCS coach Keith Barnett called a timeout. Laura Loosbrock closed out set with a kill.

An 11-2 run, including six straight at one point, gave Mines early command of the third set at 12-5. UCCS battled back to tie it at 17, but Mines answered with a 6-1 run before taking the set 25-21.

A 6-0 start set the stage for a dominant fourth set for the Mountain Lions. UCCS led by as many as nine before the Orediggers staged a late rally to trim the final margin to 25-21.

Mines had runs of four and five points, the second making it 14-8 to run away with the deciding set.
