Mountain Lions fall to West Texas A&M in five sets

CANYON, Texas - Megan Koop had 15 kills but she and her University and Colorado Colorado Springs teammates were unable to put Friday evening's match away after leading two sets to none, eventually falling to the West Texas A&M Lady Buffs 3-2 (21-15, 23-25, 25-19, 25-18, 15-12).

WTAMU is the host of the 2011 Lady Buff Classic. The Mountain Lions will complete their participation with matches Saturday against Eastern New Mexico and Washburn.

Having already taken the first two sets, UCCS (1-1) had its chance to sweep as the third set was tied at 16. The Lady Buffs (2-0) rallied for six straight points, four on kills by Halie Harton and two on blocks by Erin Dougherty.

The fourth set was also tight as UCCS trailed by just one at 16-15. The Lady Buffs again rallied, putting together a 6-1 run to take control and even the match.

WTAMU stormed to a 7-2 lead in the deciding set and was up 13-7 when Danica Lawrence has a kill and an assisted block to lead UCCS on a four-point run. After a kill by Stormi Lancaster put the Lady Buffs at match point, Lawrence put down another kill to make it 14-12. A Harton kill completed WTAMU's comeback.

Lancaster finished with a match-high 22 kills and Harton had 17. Dougherty had three solo blocks and assisted on seven others as the Lady Buffs rejected 18 UCCS attacks.

Koop, a transfer from Colorado State-Pueblo, had just two errors to post a .419 hitting mark. Alex Wood added 12 kills, while Jenica Shippy and Nikki Kinzer each had 10. Skylar Lewandowski led the Mountain Lions with 20 digs and Cindy Bathelt had 53 assists
