COLORADO SPRINGS -
Scott Kocel scored both goals as the University of Colorado Colorado Springs completed the regular season with a 2-0 victory over the Colorado Christian Cougars Sunday afternoon at Mountain Lion Stadium.
UCCS improved to 9-8-1 overall and 7-6-1 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. Â The Mountain Lions next head to Golden, Colo., where they will face the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers in a first-round RMAC playoff game on Wednesday. Â The kickoff time has yet to be announced.
It will be the first appearance in a playoff game by a UCCS men's soccer team since 2003. Other than No. 3-ranked Fort Lewis, UCCS has beaten every team in the playoff field at least once.
"From Fort Lewis, Regis, Metro, Mines, us, anybody can beat anybody," said UCCS coach Henry Ellis. "That's what the tournament's all about. We're looking forward to it."
The Mountain Lions controlled possession of the ball for most of Sunday's match.
"We looked sharp on the ball," said Ellis. "We moved it around well, played quickly, were disciplined in the back line and got a win today."
Kocel's first goal came in the 24th minute.
Eric Goldberg took possession of the ball in the UCCS half and found
Mathew Cox. Cox then sent a through ball straight up the middle that found Kocel. The junior from Colorado Springs took one touch before hammering a low shot into the left side of the goal.
Gabriel Causse set up the second goal in the 48th minute. The junior from Ville La Grand, France, beat his man down the left side and sent a crossing pass to Kocel, who punched it in for his fifth goal of the season.
UCCS outshot the Cougars 31-4.
"Our big goal was to try to make a big statement going into the playoffs," said Ellis. "I think we were able to do that today."
Colorado Christian got outstanding play from its goalkeeper, David Ilgenfritz, who had 11 saves. The Cougars finished their season with an 0-17-1 record overall, 0-14 in the RMAC.
Brandon Costa made four saves for the Mountain Lions. He shared the shutout with
Kevin Barthe, who played the final 24:24.
