LAKEWOOD - Skylar Lewandowski and Alex Wood had 12 and 10 digs respectively at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs avenged an earlier loss by sweeping the Colorado Christian Cougars 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-20) Saturday evening at the CCU Event Center.

UCCS lost 3-1 to Colorado Christian at home on Sept. 30, the third in a five-match losing streak that cost the Mountain Lions a chance at a playoff berth. In that match, Lewandowski and Wood - UCCS' top two defenders - languished on the bench because of injuries.

So it was fitting that on Saturday it was that same duo that led a Mountain Lions' defense that limited Colorado Christian to a .086 hitting mark. Also big - literally - to the UCCS defensive effort was middle blocker Nikki Kinzer, who had a solo block and six assisted blocks. The Mountain Lions blocked 10 Cougar attacks as a team.

Kinzer also led the UCCS attack with nine kills, followed closely by Megan Koop's eight and Wood's seven. Setter Cindy Bathelt had 30 of UCCS' 31 assists.

The Mountain Lions improved to 15-11 overall and 9-7 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.

Andi Weber led Colorado Christian (15-12, 10-6 RMAC) with 14 kills, while Brooke Wittmayer and Lauren Rosenthal each had 13 assists. Rosenthal also had 30 assists.

UCCS trailed a back-and-forth first set 23-22 after a kill by CCU's Tija Rudzitis. Wood tied the set with a kill before a couple of deft serves by Lewandowski helped force a pair of Cougar attack errors and handed the Mountain Lions a 25-23 win

CCU led the second set by as many as five (14-9), but three Kinzer kills sparked a rally that put UCCS ahead 16-15. The Cougars regained the advantage at 22-20, but UCCS finished the set with five straight points that included a kill and a block by Kinzer and an ace by Lewandowski.

After trailing early in the third set, the Mountain Lions finally grabbed the lead at 13-12 and never looked back.  With a 22-20 advantage, UCCS scored the set's final three points on a Koop kill and consecutive aces by Lewandowski.

The Mountain Lions will conclude their season with a Nebraska road trip, taking on No. 6 Nebraska-Kearney on Friday and Chadron State on Saturday.
