Lynn hammers UCCS in Saturday's opener

BOCA RATON, Fla. - Coming off an impressive, two-win day Friday at the 2010 Lynn University Courtyard by Marriott Invitational, the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs got schooled in Saturday's opener.

The host Lynn Knights swept the Mountain Lions 3-0 (25-14, 25-15, 25-22) at the de Hoernle Center, dropping UCCS' record for both the tournament and the season to 2-2. Lynn improved to 2-1.

The Knights looked every bit the skilled, veteran team that they are. Lynn, which qualified for the NCAA South Regional for the third straight season in 2009, returns all six starters and All-American libero Lacy Redwine from that team.

The Knights outhit UCCS .343 to .112 and had 46 kills to the Mountain Lions' 29. Lynn also dominated in the service game with seven aces, and more importantly, kept the Mountain Lions off balance, forcing them into many of the less desired back-row attacks.

The first two sets were one-sided. In fact, Lynn's Chelsea Semprini had more kills (seven) in the second set than UCCS had as a team (six) in the second set.

UCCS found itself in the final set, recovering from a 15-9 deficit to close to within two but too late at 24-22. Lynn scored the next point to close out the match.

Alex Nuttal led the Mountain Lions with eight kills, while Jenica Shippy and Nikki Kinzer each added six. Lindsey Stich had team-bests in both assists (20) and digs (12).
