Mountain Lion women shut out in season opener

Colorado Springs - Ashley Holton had two goals to propel the Abilene Christian Wildcats past the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs 3-0 Thursday at Mountain Lion Stadium.

The Wildcats' other goal came from Andrea Carpenter who also had an assist in the match.

The Mountain Lions struggled defensively as the ball was around their goal nearly the whole afternoon. Had it not been for a stellar performance from freshman keeper, Kelly Schroeder, the score would have been even more lopsided. She recorded eleven saves out of fourteen shots on goal from Abilene Christian.

UCCS' best chance came in the second half with twenty eight minutes left to go. They had the ball deep in Wildcat territory and barely missed two straight shots off of defenders and the keeper.

It was all ACU after that, UCCS missed their chance to swing the momentum and ended the game with just five shots on goal. This puts the Mountain Lions at a record of 0-1 to start the season.

"We didn't play our game at all in the first half, the goals came on easy through balls because we lost our marks," said UCCS coach Nichole Ridenour. "We can't win if we don't play a style, let alone our style.

"We did play much better in the second half," said Ridenour, a couple of the girls played really well.

"Kelly Schroeder, our keeper, played awesome. (She) steps in as a freshman and really plays well, nothing she could do with the one-on-one through balls. They were the team's fault, not hers. She played amazing."

This is the first time in UCCS' three-year women's soccer history that they have dropped the first match of the season but they are looking to rebound on Saturday against Southwest Minnesota State. That game will be in Marshall, Minn.
