Mountain Lions fall to Metro State

DENVER - Sonja Johnson's 12 kills weren't enough to prevent the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs from dropping its third straight match, this one a 3-2 (23-25, 25-16, 25-18, 23-25, 15-9) defeat Saturday evening at the hands of the Metro State Roadrunners.

Trailing two sets to one, the Mountain Lions never trailed in the fourth set but also never led by more than four. The set was tied 10 times, the final one at 23, before a kill by Alex Nuttall and a Roadrunner hitting error evened the match.

The fifth set was tied at five when Metro State scored five straight, with Gabrielle Curtis recording a kill, an assisted block and two assists, to take control. UCCS never recovered.

The Mountain Lions are now 0-5 in five-set matches this season.

Bri Morley led Metro State (10-2, 3-1 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) with 18 kills. The quick, powerful Roadrunner attack also saw Julie Casseaux and Lisa Jones record 12 kills each and Anna Mapes and Emily Greenhalgh both get 11. Curtis had 64 assists and Amy Watanabe had an astounding 37 digs.

Andrea Brodie and Jenica Shippy each had nine kills for UCCS (6-6, 1-3 RMAC). Kelsey Pobar had a team-high 20 digs and Cindy Bathelt had 38 assists.
