The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs Mountain Lions held Wayne State to a .074 hitting mark and rolled to a 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-21) victory over the No. 25-ranked Wildcats Friday evening at the Lions' Den.

The win improved UCCS' record for both the season and the 2009 Marriott Volleyball Invitational to 1-1. The Mountain Lions will face Texas Woman's Saturday at noon and Colorado State-Pueblo at 7:30 p.m. the same day.

The win Friday evening helped erase the sting of a 3-2 defeat to Hillsdale earlier in the day. Like that match, UCCS went up 2-0 and had a lead in the third set when Hillsdale fought back to not only take the set, but eventually the match.

"I wasn't really nervous about that," said UCCS setter Cindy Bathelt. "I have a lot of confidence in my teammates and I know that we can pull ourselves out of sticky situations."

"This match, when we got a point everyone was screaming, including the bench, and the gym was going crazy. The fans were going nuts and that was a really cool thing to be a part of."

Andrea Brodie led UCCS with 10 kills. A balanced attack also saw Nicole Pederson with seven kills and both Lauren Orth and Sonja Johnson with six.

Laura Brodie assisted on six of the Mountain Lions' 10 blocks while Kelsey Pobar had a team-high 17 digs. Bathelt, who transferred to UCCS from Division I Florida, had 29 assists, 10 digs and four kills.

Bathelt might be the only person on campus who really appreciated the diminutive Lions' Den.

"I love it so far,"she said. "I actually love the small gym, fans-in-your-face experience."

Andrea Brodie and Johnson each had four kills during a first set that saw UCCS reel off an 11-2 run to turn a 12-all tie into a 23-14 blowout. Wayne State responded with three straight points before kills by Brodie and Pederson capped the 25-17 win.

The second set was tied eight times, the final one at 18, as neither team could put together a lengthy run. A kill by Pederson, an ace by Kendall Utz, and a service error and a hitting error by the Wildcats put UCCS up for good at 22-18. A kills by Bathelt and a block by Laura Brodie and Johnson capped the 25-21 decision.

A 6-0 run helped the Mountain Lions take control of the final set at 15-10. Wayne State closed to within one four times but could never complete the comeback. UCCS won the set 25-21 to take the match.

Jennifer Haefner led Wayne State (1-1) with 11 kills.
