UCCS slips to seventh place with tie

ALAMOSA, Colo. - The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs women's soccer team slipped into seventh place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Sunday after the Mountain Lions could manage no better than a 1-1 draw against the Adams State Grizzlies at ASC Soccer Field.

Seventh place is significant because only six teams qualify for the RMAC playoffs.

The UCCS tie, combined with Mesa State's win over Nebraska-Kearney, put the Mountain Lions at 16 points, two behind Mesa State and one behind Colorado Christian. UCCS still has matches remaining against Nebraska-Kearney (Oct. 30 at home) and Metro State (Nov. 1 at Denver). Mesa State will face Colorado State-Pueblo at home on the 30th before heading to Regis on the 1st, while Colorado Christian will play a home game against Regis on the 30th and finish the regular season with a road game at Colorado Mines on the 1st.

Teams are awarded three points for a win, one point for a tie.

Freshman goalkeeper Kayla Millar made 10 saves for UCCS (6-8-1, 5-8-1 RMAC). Kristen Dorsey made eight saves for Adams State (6-11-2, 4-9-2 RMAC).

After a scoreless first half, the Mountain Lions to the lead at the 54:07 mark. Ashley Collins send a free kick across the goal mouth, where Kristen Preble was making a far-post run. Preble chested in the ball for her team-leading third goal of the season.

But UCCS was unable to make the goal stand up. Just over 15 minutes later, Jenna Iwaniec redirected a near-post crossing pass by Ashley Grover to tie the score.

Neither team was able to score in either overtime period despite combining for 14 shots.
