Mesa State Beats UCCS in Straight Sets

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Jenica Shippy's 11 kills weren't enough to keep the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs from suffering a straight-set defeat at the hands of the Mesa State Mavericks Friday evening at Brownson Arena.

Alisan Tompkins had 19 kills as Mesa State improved to 9-8, 7-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference with the 25-15, 25-16, 28-26 win. Gabrielle Lovato had 10 kills while Tompkins added 13 digs to her impressive night.

"They played well," said UCCS coach Keith Barnett. "Give them all the credit."

Sonja Johnson led UCCS with 14 digs while Kendall Utz added 10. Other than Shippy, no Mountain Lion managed more than five kills.

Tompkins had seven kills and Lovato added four as Mesa State dominated the first set 25-15. UCCS (8-7, 3-4 RMAC) managed just five kills against an athletic Mavericks defense that recorded 17 digs, six by Meredith Dolny.

Tompkins added seven more kills in a 25-16 second set. The Mountain Lions never led in either of the first two sets while star setter Cindy Bathelt was held to just nine assists on 47 attempts - a 19.1 average or just over half her season average of 36.9.

"We got shelled," said Barnett. "They knew what we were going to do."

The third set more than made up for the drama that was lacking in the first two. UCCS led by as many as six (20-14) during the set and were ahead 22-19 when consecutive blocks, a kill by Lovato and a UCCS hitting error gave Mesa State a 23-22 lead. Shippy recorded consecutive kills in response, giving the Mountain Lions the first of their three set points.

A Lovato kill evened the set at 24, but a hitting error would provide UCCS with a second set point. The Mountain Lions answered with a hitting error of their own to even it again at 25.

Laura Brodie's kill put the Mountain Lions up 26-25, but their failure to finish off the Mavericks would be their undoing. Antoinette McCormick tied it with a kill. Meagan Bosch and Tara King followed with a block and Tompkins, fittingly, ended the match with a kill.

Shippy had eight kills in the set to no avail.
